John Bevan qualified as a scientist, and is now retired. He worked in the nuclear industry, in a university and in educational administration as a Director of Education and as Chief Officer of a Higher Education Funding Agency, and latterly as an Ombudsman. He was until recently the chair of the Adventure Activities Industry Advisory Committee (of which he had been a founder member when it was originally established by the Health & Safety Commission). He has been actively involved in youth work for over 50 years.
He is a hill walker and active on Rights of Way issues. He is particularly involved in drafting submissions to DEFRA and Natural England on CROW, Coastal Access, and other access issues.
